According to expert bike enthusiasts, when looking for a quality, high performance elliptical trainer, expect to spend at minimum of about $1k. Now there definitely are cheaper models on the market that you can get, but looking at consumer reviews, those are the models that people were most unhappy with. Its possible to get an Elliptical Trainer for less than a thousand dollars, but those versions will not come equipped with the same features as some of the better models. We have compiled a list below of factors that consumers and bike enthusiasts say you need to look for when purchasing an elliptical trainer.

1. Try before you buy – Its always best to try an item out in the store before buying it online (because its always cheaper online). Trying it out in the store will allow you to evaluate the item, and will help you make sure that the unit has all of the features you desire, as well as the overall “feel”. Make sure you are comfortable with the unit.

2. Stability – Make sure that when you test your desired unit, that it is sturdy and stable. When using the unit it should never be noisy, and it should have fluidity to its movements. If it feels unsturdy, or “wobbly”, then we suggest looking at a different unit. The pedals also play a key role here, as they are what provide you with your base. Make sure they arent slippery, and that they are wide enough for your feet (some units have adjustable width).

2. Stride Length – According to consumers, experts, and enthusiasts, look for a unit that has a stride length upwards of 20″ (inches). Anything under that is too short, regardless of height. If you can find a unit that has adjustable stride length, make sure 20″ is an option.

3. Handlebars – Make sure that the handlebars feel comfortably to you when you hold them. They should be placed in such manner that they don’t get in your way or bump into them as you use them, and should glide back and forth.

4. Programmability – Make sure your desired unit that has both pre-programmed, and manual courses. This will allow you to be in full control of your workout with full customization. Also make sure that the LCD doesn’t require too much hard work to be able to read it, and it should easily show you the stats that you are trying to find (speed, time, distance, calories burned, heart rate, etc. etc.)

5. Resistance – Make sure that your desired unit has resistance levels that are easily adjustable. Some of the cheaper units wont have an adjustable incline, and only have manual resistance level settings.

6. Space & Other Tips – Make sure that your desired unit will fit easily into your workout area, without requiring too much work (we provide a chart below of the size and weight of the top 3 units). Also, make sure that you keep all of the screwable parts tightened, and the joints and other moving parts well lubricated.
