Juicer types, and pick the best juicer for you

When looking to buy a Juicer, its important to first understand that there is more than one type. The three primary groups of Juicers are: Centrifugal Juicers, which work at high speeds and are great for soft fruits. Masticating Juicers, which are great for leafy greens. And finally Citrus Juicers, which are meant solely for citrus fruits (oranges, lemons, etc. etc.). Years ago the majority of Juicers were manual, meaning that you would have to use a hand press, but today the majority of Juicers are electrical, and will do the work for you.

Centrifugal Juicers are best for soft fruits and veggies. They work by utilizing a spinning axis that rotates in the center of the machine and has metal blades (which are sometimes referred to as the “teeth”) that literally tear your produce all the way down to the pulp. Once brought down to the pulp, the spinning continues to separate the juice from the rest of the produce.

Masticating Juicers are best for leafy green veggies (I.E Kale, spinach, Wheargrass). These sort of Juicers use what is called an Auger (most have single gear augers), that functions by using a chewing/masticating motion to extract the juice from the produce. Masticating Juicers are much slower than Centrifugal Juicers, but the Juice extracted from them are exposed to far less oxidation.

What to look for:

1. Preferences – Make sure that when looking for a Juicer, you ask yourself the following questions; How often will I use it? What will I be looking to extract juice from? If you’ll be looking to juice oranges, then a citrus juicer would be ideal. If your looking to juice wheatgrass, then a masticating juicer would be ideal. Make sure that you are clear on what you’ll be juicing, and how often you look to use the unit when considering the purchase.

2. Speed – Make sure to take into consideration all juicers don’t operate at the same speeds. Centrifugal Juicers are the fastest of the three groups, but has a lower juice yield then that of a Masticating juicer, which is much slower.

3. Technical Features – You want to make sure that all of the onboard features are things that will quickly, and easily benefit you. For example, a long power cord. If you have a long power cord, it’ll be easier to maneuver your juicer from being directly under your cabinet if it is on your kitchen’s countertop. Look for a Juicer that will allow you to see the juice’s extraction level so you can measure just how much Juice your are actually getting, WHILE the juicer is operating. Look for a feed tube that is wide enough in diameter that will allow you to put more produce into your juicer without having to quarter, and section it off. Lastly, a pulp container is MANDATORY. Look for a juicer that has a pulp container to catch the pulp separate from the main unit.

4. Clean Up – How simple will the juicer be to clean? Are the parts dishwasher safe? When disassembling the juicer how many parts are there, 3 or 15? The smaller the number of parts during disassembly, and those parts being dishwasher safe make things incredibly easy (and quick) to clean. The easier it is to clean, the more often you will use it.

5. Warranty – What kind of warranty comes with the juicer? A 1 year warranty? A 5 year warranty but with labor costs? When buying a juicer its always important to check for the warranty, and to also be sure of what the warranty will cover.

6. Usage Frequency – The last, and probably most important thing to consider is your purpose for buying the juicer. Are you juicing for weight loss? Are you juicing for health benefits? The more aware you are of WHY you are juicing will also determine its use. Consumers have reported that they bought juicers, just for recreational reasons, and were unaware that it would take a semi-large amount of produce to create the juice. If you are juicing for a purpose this wont be a problem. Also, try to get your produce from whole food stores, where it will be cheaper than major chain grocery stores.
