Quotes from members of the North American Hunting Club field testers. On Black Mountain High Country Socks!

"As a person who's feet/toes get cold easily, I noticed a measurable difference in how long my feet stayed warm. When I warmed my socked feet by the heater and put my shoes back on, my feet actually warmed up. A bonus feature is that as a single sock it was the most comfortable of any sock I've worn. They were far better in all categories compared to other socks I've tried. Where can I buy them?" T.H., Kirkwood, MO

"The Black Mountain socks were very warm and breathable. I wore them 5 or 6 times while hunting this year and was very happy with them. My wife wore them 1 or 2 times and she loved them also. They don't cause your feet to sweat, and yet keep your feet warm. There is no comparison to other socks and $20.00 is a small price to pay for these socks. They are the most comfortable socks I have ever had and they are very durable". C.M., Woodville, TX

"The Black Mountain High Country socks are comfortable and warm, the warmest socks that I have ever tried. I have cold feet when hunting and my feet were warm to the touch after 10 hours in the woods at 22° to 27° F. I would recommend these socks to anyone that hunts or spends time in the woods." J.H., Dixon, MO

"Black Mountain socks did an excellent job of keeping my feet warm when sitting in my deer stand in the cold South Dakota winter. I was really surprised how well they worked. I've tried other things but could not find anything that kept my feet as warm as these socks. They held up well and were really comfortable. They are worth the price." C.W., Ipswich, SD

"I would recommend these socks to anyone who loves the outdoors and has problems keeping their feet warm. I have had problems with keeping my feet warm and comfortable for several years since suffering from frostbite. The Black Mountain socks are extremely comfortable and kept my feet warm even in sub-freezing temperatures." M.N., Salt Lake City, UT

"I have used my Black Mountain High Country socks with Outlast on five bow hunting trips for both deer and elk. The temperature has ranged from 54° down to 16° and my feet have not been hot or cold, but just right. They also stay up over my calf better than any sock I have ever worn. I have hiked over 90 miles in them and I recommend them to all club members. They also wash up great. I think Black Mountain socks are great socks and worth the money." M.J., Salt Lake City, UT

"I strongly recommend this product to fellow NAHC members. I had polio when I was 4 yrs. old and I have never been able to keep my feet warm until I used Black Mountain socks. I actually could feel the heat generating from them. I used them in temperatures from 15° to 55° with no discomfort. I could sit longer without getting cold fee. These are the best socks I've ever used." J.L., Hudsonville, MI

"I was 69 on Dec. 23, 2004. In 1988 I broke my back and since then I haven't been able to hut in comfort due to bad circulation in my left leg. Normally I would have to go in after 2 or 3 hours because my feet and left leg would get cold and numb. When I put on the Black Mountain socks I could feel my feet start to get warm and comfortable. I went out (chill factor was about 0°) and was able to walk easier and four hours later my feet were still warm. These socks are better then electric socks, they are like magic. I truly recommend these magic socks. I also wear them indoors watching TV, I get so comfortable, I fall asleep. Black Mountain socks are beyond comparison." R.P., Shelocta, PA
"P.S. I wasn't lucky for a buck, that's ok. I had enough magic. Thank you!"

"Due to poor circulation in my lower legs, the height and snugness of the Black Mountain High Country socks puts them far above any other socks I have worn. I wore them with boots that had only 200 grams of Thinsulate at 15°F and my feet stayed warm. They are a bit pricey, but worth it if your feet stay warm." H.D., Portage, WI

"Your Black Mountain High Country socks impressed me very much. My feet sweat quite a bit when I wear boots and my feet stayed extremely dry while wearing them. They fit and felt great all day long. Best pair of socks I have ever worn. The wide elastic band worked great and did not allow the socks to slide down. These socks are a real value at just about any price. I highly recommend this product to other NAHC members who want their feet to stay dry and warm. Compared to other socks I've worn, these socks are the only ones that kept my meet warm and dry." R.B., Lake Jackson, TX

"The extra high tops make the Black Mountain High Country socks comfortable with 12" boots. I wore the socks with a pair of wolverine boots and bound them comfortable on an all day hunt. I think the socks are a good buy." R.D., Newburg, PA

"The Black Mountain socks kept my feet warm all day. The fit is just unreal, it feels like you are wearing a pair of old slippers. If you want a pair of socks that feel good and keep your feet warm, Black Mountain socks are worth every penny. Regular hunting socks don't compare." G.W., Mount Joy, PA

"Black Mountain High Country socks are a must for the every day hunter. I love to wear these socks on cold mornings in the duck blind. They are extremely warm and I believe every hunter needs to won a pair. They cost a little more, but they are very comfortable and durable compared to regular socks." J.A., Savoy, TX

"It was like having heating pads on my feet all day. I usually have trouble with cold feet by the end of the day, but not with Black Mountain socks. They are so much better than any other socks I have used in the past and they continue to work as well after 30 washings as when they were new." J.K., Butte, MT

"This is the first pair of insulated socks that I have ever loved! These socks are very warm and they are not nearly as bulky as most of the others. I want a few more pair! I'm throwing my others away! The Black Mountain High Country socks are great! Every outdoorsman should own several pair. Oh yeah, they even stay up when hiking through the mountains! The price is fair considering the comfort and endurance." G.W., Athens, PA

"I attached a story that covers some of these things."

"Physical comfort is outstanding. Temperature comfort is also outstanding. I am a diabetic and have a number of problems. The Black Mountain socks help me to have comfortable feet all day long. This product test turned out to be an absolute blessing for me and I know that this product will help others while hunting or in everyday life as they have for me. Thank you NAHC! There is no comparison. They hold their shape and do not move around on your feet. Temperature control was so outstanding that it is hard to take them off." J.B., Middleton, WI

The story of these incredible socks starts 40 years ago, the first time I went deer hunting with my father Earl and my brother Bill. They could not believe that my feet were cold riding in the car with the heater on wide open. My father tried to help that first night by buying me new boots and better socks. It was a good try on a brutally cold winter day. My first year in the woods and I am freezing (I know some of you have been there). A nice buck comes through and I try to blame the miss on how cold my feet were, but there was a fair amount of buck fever that day. My cold feet problem continued through the years and I tried battery socks and every other idea that came along. Then about four years ago I took my faithful grouse hunting buddy, Jake my old Springer Spaniel, up north. (A rescue dog that turned into a great hunter, had to be sent to his final hunting grounds in November 2003.) That first day he got a little carried away and got about 3 gun ranges out on me. After about 5 minutes of coaxing , I got him back under control and sitting next to me as I complained about how he made me stand there and let my feet get so cold that I had trouble explaining to him that hunters sometimes shoot their dogs for that kind of behavior (just kidding, but I wanted to get his attention). I had his attention so good that when a grouse flushed 3 feet away that I did not even get a shot off! Man, my feet were getting colder all the time. Jake and I camped out that night in early November and I had to have him lay across my feet just to get a little sleep. It was definitely more than a one-dog night.

Now a few years later, I am home enjoying the day reading our NAHC magazine with our new rescue Springer (Madie) next to me and UPS shows up with a field test package for me. Madie is all interested. (Boy shi is going to take some work, but she is a great companion. I think my wife's folks said something like that about me.) Back to the test though. Socks? They're socks, so I think "big deal, I have tried a lot of different socks and have had a lot of problems." Besides getting a bit older (55) and I have diabetes, which has added a few more problems with my feet. Being a life member, I wanted to test these socks like all the other socks that I have tried over my life and thrown away. These socks, though, were interesting. The name for one thing was long "Black Mountain High Country with Outlast." I used them in the field all day and left them on around the house at night. They are the absolute most comfortable sock ever. I wore them all day at work and they were still comfortable! They cost about $20.00 a pair, but that is so reasonable for the comfort they give that I now own 3 pairs. The guys where I work (Zimbrick Inc. Madison WI) thought I was over the edge. I told them that they are so comfortable that I would have paid more. Some want to buy the socks and some want to buy stock in the company that makes them. My recommendation? BUY! BUY! BUY! Oh what comfort. John Birkholz

However, after wearing the Black Mountain High Country socks on several ice fishing trips, I have to say they do work as advertised. Usually after 4-5 hours on the ice, my feet begin to get cold. The results were astounding considering that I dressed one foot in my usual two heavy pair of wool socks and the other with a single pair of the test product. The Black Mountain High Country socks performed as well as the much heavier and bulky wool. How I wish that I had had such a product when I was a full-time Registered Trapper in the 50s and 60s and later as an Ontarion Conservation Officer in Northern Ontario. “I HAVE TRIED SEVERAL DIFFERENT COLD WEATHER PRODUCTS FOR KEEPING MY FEET WARM AND COMFY IN WINTER CONDITIONS AND NONE HAVE MEASURED UP TO B.M.H.C. SOCKS. EVEN HEAVY HUNTING SOCKS AND FOOTWARMER PADS DIDN’T PERFORM AS WELL. WHEN SPENDING A DAY ON THE ICE (6+HRS) OR 2 HRS. CLEANING SNOW FROM DRIVE & WALKWAYS, MY FEET WERE VERY COZY WEARING B.M.H.C. SOCKS. I’VE ALWAYS GAUGED MY OVERALL COMFORT BY MY FEET. WHEN MY FEET GET COLD, I’M DONE WITH WHAT EVER I’M DOING. BLACK MOUNTAIN SOCKS GET AN A+ IN ALL ASPECTS.” David L. Maas, Saint Ignace, MI

“I would recommend Black Mountain High Country socks because on the coldest weekend (-25° to -30° wind chill) I decided to try out the socks. They were very comfortable each time I wore them (four times so far) while ice fishing.” D. Lennop, Fond du Lac, WI

They are a great product for those who hunt and fish in the cold winter weather.” Travis Devore, Prosser, WA

“The Black Mountain socks came just in time for a Scout cold weather hike. They were very warm. The fit was excellent and did not bind in any way. I then washed them and wore them on a bank fishing trip with the same satisfaction. The comfort, warmth and fit remained excellent. They are a top value and I have recommended them to other scout leaders and my fishing buddies.” Leon Backer, Wilmington, DE

“I wore the Black Mountain socks in my Redwing Gortex hunting boots while ice fishing on Cowan Lake at Big River, SK, Canada. It was a mild day at 0° F and we were on the ice for about 4 ½ hours, my feet were toasty warm the whole time. That may have had a little to do with catching 15 decent perch while testing the socks.” James Forbes, Big River, SK, Canada

“Black Mountain socks are really comfortable to wear and really keep the feet warm.” Thomas Larson Jr., Elk River, MN

“I completely recommend this product to fellow members. The Black Mountain socks are not bulky, very comfortable and keep your feet and calves very warm. They are not a bulky as wool socks, so your boots are not so tight fitting. They performed better than two pair of wool socks and kept my feet warmer while standing on the ice for several hours while ice fishing. They are a better value than wool socks. Dennis Cobb, Dudley, MA

“Fished all day in temps of 0° F to 10° F. My feet tend to sweat when I am active. I drilled over twenty holes through the ice and moved my portable shack four times. When I drove my ATV back to shore, my feet were warm and dry!” Bert Erickson, Waukesha, WI
